Melton Overview

The Florence Melton Adult Education Program, a Project of the Hebrew University, offers you the opportunity to acquire the foundations of Jewish knowledge in an open, pluralistic, intellectually stimulating learning environment.

Melton is a revolutionary approach to Jewish adult learning. It is a structured, integrated, text-based course of Jewish study that provides participants with the foundations of Jewish knowledge. Melton brings together thinking adults from across the entire community to share their ideas and perspectives and embraces all expressions of Judaism.

Melton asks 'Why?' and provides participants with the resources to find answers relevant to them, wherever they find themselves on the Jewish spectrum. The Melton program does not promote a particular approach to Judaism or Jewish observance.

When you enrol in Melton, you join a network of hundreds of students in over 60 locations across the globe. Experience Melton and understand why this program has so profoundly affected the lives of thousands of Jewish adults around the world.

After two years of learning, graduates will appreciate the wonderful world of Jewish learning and also receive a certificate of Jewish Studies from the Hebrew University.

What makes Melton unique?
• Commitment to Learning: Students enrol in a sequential two-year course and meet once a week for 30 weeks each year. There are no examinations. The only prerequisite is a commitment to learn. Melton infuses students with a desire to make Jewish learning part of their lives.

• Sophisticated Curriculum: Four text-based courses make up the curriculum, which was developed by a team of experts at the Hebrew University's Melton Centre for Jewish Education - the world's largest academic centre for Jewish education.

• Quality Teaching and Learning: To uphold the high standards which are the hallmark of Melton, all faculty members participate in ongoing professional enrichment programs. Questioning and dialogue are encouraged in a pluralistic classroom environment.

• Israel-Diaspora Partnership: Our local community partners with the Hebrew University to provide Melton. There are study and enrichment seminars in Israel, run out of the Hebrew University: the Melton Israel Seminar for students; the Faculty Israel Seminar for teachers; and the International Directors Conference for Melton Directors.

Melton is supported by the NSW Friends of the Hebrew University and the Education Heritage Foundation.
