How do rabbis decide on questions of religious law today? Can the traditional literature shed light on matters of contemporary medical and scientific interest? What divides different sectors of the Orthodox world from one another, and how do they differ from individual Progressive communities? By tracing the development of Jewish Law, this course will examine the evolution of one of the most characteristic elements of our tradition.
Week 1: The concept and origins of "Halakha" (Jewish Law)

Week 3: The mediaeval period and codification of the law

The Making of the Modern Middle East: 19th Century Until Today
Presented by Prof Moshe Ma'oz
This course will explore the political and social changes in the area of the Middle East known as the Fertile Crescent, which encompasses Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and the Palestinian territories.
Week 1: The emergence of nationalist identities and movements.
Week 2: The 1948 war with Israel and attitudes towards Zionism.
Week 3: Religious and ethnic minorities – conflict and integration.
Week 4: Nationalist and Islamic parties and military regimes.
